Infinite Photo

This is ker-azy!
On the National Geographic website, they have an "infinite photo" of the National Parks consisting of images like the one above.
Click on the main image to zoom in and find it is made up of tons of smaller images.
Zoom in again to find that thoseimages are also made of smaller ones.
Etc.
I think the gorgeous shots of the parks are a perfect showcase for this technique.
Check it out!

PS. Tooling around the NatGeo website led me to a selection of vintage parks posters. They sell these in postcard forms at the national parks and I think they're awesome. The one below of the Grand Canyon is pasted into my scrapbook from my first trip there.

And here are a couple other good ones:

Dewy Sleeping Insects

Check out this article on the Daily Mail about an amateur photographer who seeks out sleeping insects in the early morning hours, then photographs them up close while they are still covered in morning dew. The insects look like beautiful jewels. What a great idea...wonder how he came up with it?

What the...?

You might be wondering what the heck is going in these photos.
This photographer lives in San Francisco and took these shots of the hilly streets there, but tilted to flatten them!
A new perspective on one of my favorite cities :)

Cure for Polaroid Withdrawl

Although I never owned a Polaroid camera, I like many others felt a stab of regret when Polaroid gave up on its most famous product. Yes, there are some alternatives from Fujifilm, but it's just not the same.
Luckily, The Impossible Project has taken up the mantle of instant analog photography. They've released a type of film called PX100 First Flush, which yields sepia-y monotone prints. Two examples are shown above, and you can see more at their online database.
You can buy the film from their website, a pack for $22, starting March 25 (in two days!). They're also going to release color packs later this year. Yay for analog!

Whats fer bfast

German photographer Oliver Schwarzwald has created a photo series of different national breakfasts, which flavorpill presents as a guessing game--guess the country based on the photo of its breakfast.
If you're wondering why this is worth a post, it's simple: I effin love breakfast.

One in 8 Million

Check out this awesome story collection on the NY Times website titled "One in 8 Million" about various "characters" of NYC.
I've already watched "The Regular" and "The Walker" and they're really great. There's a voiceover from the person who was interviewed, explaining their place in New York, their personal New York experience, accompanied by a montage of black and white photographs of them going about their business. Really interesting to hear and see so many different perspectives on my hometown.

Gwon Osang

Check out this guy.
He makes sculptures by photographing his subjects hundreds of times and putting the photos together into hauntingly off-kilter 3D objects.

RIP Irving Penn

I loved this man's work.
From the Times obit: “Here was a young American who seemed unspoiled by European mannerisms or culture. I remember he wore sneakers and no tie. I was struck by his directness and a curious unworldliness, a clarity of purpose, and a freedom of decision. What I call Penn’s American instincts made him go for the essentials.”

Lomo's Russian Winter in New York

Last week I went to a workshop kinda thing at the new Lomography shop in Manhattan. There were loaner Diana+ cameras (though I had my own with me of course!) and free rolls of 120 film for all. We went walkabout in lower Manhattan and took some pictures, including experimenting with the Diana's pinhole setting, as in my picture above. More on my flickr. If you're interested in future events, you can get on the mailing list at the Lomography website.

Dead Squirrel

Encountered this guy on the street last week. I only had my cameraphone on me but it's amazing what that thing can do. The neat thing about this is the bones that show through--the intact vertebrae of the tail, etc. Couple more shots on my flickr. Some day I'll do a real project with these roadkill shots. Maybe a print series. I can just see some lovely layered silkscreens...

Soy una amiga!

It's official: I've been made a bona fide Lomo Amigo on lomography.com! Check out my interview and gallery on the online magazine/blog thing and also on the Lomo Amigos website under "Diana." The shots are all from this summer, taken on my friendly little LC-A+! Most of them are also on my flickr, though I haven't gotten around to posting all of them yet. Enjoy!

Polaroid PoGo

I just heard about this nifty little device a couple weeks ago and I've been wanting one ever since. It's a tiny printer that you can hook up to a mobile phone or digital camera for instant prints on equally nifty Zink (zero ink) paper. You can connect your devices to the printer wirelessly and, as you can see, it fits as easily into your pocket as the phone itself. Zink also comes in adhesive sticker varieties, so you can make instant original stickers. Think of the possibilities! At $150 a pop, they're not even that expensive. Let's all get one and paper the world with our images.
