Apparently so. "My name is Brian/and I'm the man./I write hit songs/with a wave of my hand." This is just so incredibly strange. From the manic giggle at the beginning to the awkward clips of various Beach Boys tracks, it's just...wrong. Although I have to say there was one portion that sounded a bit like the Beastie Boys. Who knew?
Apparently Converse has a series called Three Artists, One Song where they bring together three artists in the studio to write and record a new song. The most recent one is called "All Summer" and is a collaboration between Kid Cudi, Vampire Weekend guitarist Rostam, and Best Coast. You can download it on the Converse website, linked above. I thought it was aight. But it led me to the first song in the series, "My Drive Thru," which I really like. It's a collaboration between Santigold, Julian Casablancas (of The Strokes), N.E.R.D. and Pharrell. Check out the awesome video below!
Would you ever believe this is by Paul McCartney?!? Very strange. I want to hear this in a DJ set. I've been on a total Beatles solo career kick lately...it started with getting Oh Yoko!, one of my favorite songs ever, stuck in my head.
Now here is a wonderful example of the right choice of music making all the difference in an otherwise somewhat lackluster video. The original just has the standard retarded rustling noises in the background but this version is absolute edge-of-your-seat amazing. Found on the "answer to my dreams" website Kitteh Roulette.
Greetings from Riga! Check this ish out. DIE ANTWOORD crew is: Zef rap-rave master NINJA Fre$h, futuristik rich bitch, YO-LANDI VI$$ER And beat monster, DJ HI-TEK DIE ANTWOORD represents the sounds of the Zuid Afrikaanse streets. Their fierce, hi-energy sound is inspired by Cape Town's fast and furious mini-bus taxi's you can hear coming from blocks away with an evil DOOM! DOOM! DOOM!
Check out their website for more, including "20 fun facts" and a hilarious slideshow as the background. Ninja has a tattoo on his neck that says "pretty wise," one on his chest that says "how can an angel break my heart," and one on his side that says "A woman is more dangerous than a loaded pistol." And then there's Richie Rich on his pec. Oh, and Caspar with a huge boner on his shoulder. Wow. Check out this video and the extreme close-up shot of Ninja hip thrusting in Pink Floyd boxers. Genius.
What does "Die Antwoord" mean? The answer. Answer to what? Whatever man. Fuck.
Too hot to handle, too cold to hold Betta not fuck with my Gameboy or I'll BOOST YOU
Inspired by Flavorwire, I took the lyrics from my top 10 most played songs in iTunes (minus my actual top 5, which are non-vocal tracks from the Streets of Rage soundtrack that I like to run to...haha) and made word clouds with Wordle. My top 3 songs are all Jackson 5 :) The rest are kinda influenced by my running soundtrack, but ah well. Enjoy...and try making your own!
Using Wordle, the geniuses over at Flavorwire created word clouds for iTunes' 12 top-selling songs of all time. They write: "If you’ve ever bemoaned the state of modern commercial music, the inanity of looking at these consolidated lyrics will do nothing to ease your pain. But it is kind of funny." Haha, I agree. Can you guess which songs these word clouds belong to? See them all here.
I never knew much about Fever Ray (aka Karin Dreijer Andersson, the female half of The Knife) until I stumbled across this video:
of her accepting an award in Sweden for best dance performer. I was intrigued, a singer who does not show her face and comes up with ever more imaginative ways to hide it...I mean look at that melting makeup! So I checked out her music and found this video:
It's gorge...I think I will have to try painting eyes on the palms of my hands. Check her out!
Wanna rock some season-appropriate tunage but wary of hitting on 'Last Christmas'? I hear ya. Check out this youtube playlist I'm working on. Suggestions welcome!
Vampire Weekend...can Contra live up to their eponymous debut? We'll find out on January 12th. In the meantime, what do you think about this video? I can't make up my mind. The effects are cool but I think the band kinda hams it up too much. Then again, maybe I'm just hatin for the sake of it.
This collab between Beck and Charlotte Gainsbourg I am more sure I like. What a fantastically nonsensical video, and the song's good too. Oh Beck. You melt my heart.
Unfortunately I couldn't seem to find an embeddable version of the video I'm most excited about, for Yeasayer's new single 'Ambling Alp'. Check it out here.
Much music joy to look forward to in the coming months!
