Art Cakes

One of the pages in flavorpill's list of pop culture cakes is on cakes inspired by visual art, and I just had to re-post their awesomeness.
Who wouldn't want a cake based on the work of Warhol, Picasso, Hirst, Banksy, or Mondrian?!?
(Pollock)
(Warhol)
(van Gogh)
(Picasso)
(Mondrian)
(Banksy)
(Hirst)
I'm particularly fond of the Mondrian and Banksy cakes, although the Warhol and Hirst ones are pretty darn cool as well.

German photographer Oliver Schwarzwald has created a photo series of different national breakfasts, which flavorpill presents as a guessing game--guess the country based on the photo of its breakfast.
If you're wondering why this is worth a post, it's simple: I effin love breakfast.

Aquaponics

Check out this article from the New York Times about aquaponic gardens.
Aquaponics is a combination of hydroponics and aquaculture that uses 80-90% less water than traditional growing methods (as you can imagine this is of particular interest to drought-prone places such as Australia) and produces a far greater yield. One of the gardeners interviewed in the article had a harvest of 347 cherry tomatoes from one plant, and 175 cucumbers from three plants. Yowza! Plus they get to have fishies, which can be yummy edible ones like tilapia or trout or pretty ones like giant goldfish. If I ever have enough space, I want to give this a whirl! Imagine having fresh herbs year-round and piles of fresh veggies whenever you want. Mmm.

Steak Frites

I cannot WAIT to go eat the delicious steak frites at the brand new Manhattan branch of Paris restaurant Le Relais de l'Entrecôte when I get back east. Reading an article about good steak frites, the description rang a bell...I realized I had finally discovered the name of the place my mother took me on my first visit to Paris when I was 11 years old. I always remembered how delicious it was...now I can have it again, in my own city :)
