Aquaponics

Check out this article from the New York Times about aquaponic gardens.
Aquaponics is a combination of hydroponics and aquaculture that uses 80-90% less water than traditional growing methods (as you can imagine this is of particular interest to drought-prone places such as Australia) and produces a far greater yield. One of the gardeners interviewed in the article had a harvest of 347 cherry tomatoes from one plant, and 175 cucumbers from three plants. Yowza! Plus they get to have fishies, which can be yummy edible ones like tilapia or trout or pretty ones like giant goldfish. If I ever have enough space, I want to give this a whirl! Imagine having fresh herbs year-round and piles of fresh veggies whenever you want. Mmm.

One in 8 Million

Check out this awesome story collection on the NY Times website titled "One in 8 Million" about various "characters" of NYC.
I've already watched "The Regular" and "The Walker" and they're really great. There's a voiceover from the person who was interviewed, explaining their place in New York, their personal New York experience, accompanied by a montage of black and white photographs of them going about their business. Really interesting to hear and see so many different perspectives on my hometown.
