Finnish Style (who knew?)

Today I stumbled across the Finnish style blog Hel Looks. I guess given the level of personal style I know to be prevalent in other Scandinavian countries I shouldn't have been so surprised, but surprised I was at the creativity, elegance, diversity etc. of the looks on the streets of Finland.
One interesting discovery was the prevalence of Vagabond Shoes. A quick look at their website has me wanting these booties very badly:

Free shipping in the UK! Hm, might have to get some English relatives to send me some...
Also, I had of course heard of Marimekko but had no clue they make clothing...including this adorable dress which I would happily wear (but sadly, would not pay $215 for):

All in all an illuminating discovery...perhaps I need to accept my old Swedish nanny's invitation to her Finnish vacation house sooner rather than later!

A Peace Treaty Jewelry

A Peace Treaty is an accessories line co-founded by a Pakistani Muslim and a Libyan Jew to employ skilled artisans in areas of strife and to make their products available and appealing to a wide international audience.
This season one of their three collections is gold-plated bronze jewelry in bold geometric shapes made by Kurdish artisans. I really love this necklace in particular:

At $170, it's not exactly within my budget, but maybe for a special occasion!
They also make scarves. Go check it out!

Gia Coppola Strikes Again

I enjoyed this short that Gia Coppola (Sofia's niece) made for Opening Ceremony starring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman.
Now she has made a film starring The Like to promote Zac Posen for Target.

The collection is available starting April 25.
Yay!

90s Style Icons

I have always loved Clarissa Explains It All (and own it on DVD, natch) and Clarissa's fab outfits are a source of inspiration. One of my favorites was a bright blue coat with brass military-like detailing accompanied by a black and white headscarf. The best part was a thin braid behind the scarf, with a gold fish skeleton dangling from it. LOVE it. Lots of creative uses of patterned leggings, plaid, and crazy pattern combinations abound on the show. Now I have found a similar figure in Rayanne Graff from My So-Called Life. Rayanne and her friend Rickie (pictured below) are nothing if not original. Rickie's red military jacket knocked my socks off, and Rayanne's creativity with her blond curls, including the ever-present loose lock on the right side of her face, is always welcome. One of my favorite Rayanne outfits was a structured green jacket with great sculptural shape over a zebra-print dress. Not to mention a large number of incredible dangly earrings and a fabulous vampiress costume for the Halloween episode. Amazing. If only I could pull it off.
